The question now for Fritz is did he empty the tank on day one? The good thing about the majors is that you can sometimes get one to two days break before your next match. Let us hope the ice bath worked. [17] Frances Tiafoe defeated Borna Coric, easily despite losing the second set in a topsy turvy tiebreaker. Tiafoe won 6-3,6-7(7),6-2,6-3.
Nice to see Amanda Anisimova winning a match. The American upset [13] Liudmila Samsonova, 6-3, 6-4. I hope she can build on this victory, because we know she has game. However, I wonder if the desire to play is still there. Another nice to see, Alycia Parks finally gets another win. She defeated the qualifier Daria Snigur 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. Caroline Dolehide won her match 6-2, 6-4 against Leolia Jeanjean.
Embed from Getty ImagesThe struggles continue for J.J. Wolf, who lost to [26] Sebastian Baez after winning the first set. He retired 6-3, 2-6, 3-6, 0-3. Emina Bektas, who I have never seen before, lost 4-6, 4-6.
A Few Upsets, But No Real Surprises
[20] Magda Linette retired in her match with Caroline Wozniacki, losing 2-6, 0-2. Despite not being ranked, we know that Wozniacki is a tough first round opponent for anyone. Unfortunately for the Polish player, she drew the short stick. [30] Xinyu Wang was upset by Diane Parry 3-6, 6-2, 3-6.
2024 Australian Open Special Mention
Alize Cornet was not able to work her magic. The French player is currently ranked one hundred and twelve and would have loved to get some points here to get back into the top hundred. It just was not her day. She lost to the qualifier, Maria Timofeeva, 2-6, 4-6.
