Coco Gauff Forges A New Era In American Tennis

Coco Gauff US Open Champion

[6] Coco Gauff won her first of many major titles because of her faith in Jesus Christ. There is a post I wrote about religion in tennis that fascinates many people. Our spiritual health is the foundation of any success we have on this earth. Gauff knows this well. Contrary to other players who profess to believe in Jesus Christ, Gauff at only nineteen walks the talk.

Coco Gauff, US Open Champion

Coco Gauff associated her self-worth with her performance on the tennis court. That was a telling statement from the American in her post match conference. However, what we may sometimes forget is that she is still just a teenager. A well-spoken teenager, but still a teenager. So many people struggle with their self-worth, and it is important to remember that our worth has absolutely NOTHING to do with our position or possessions in life. Our worth also has nothing to do with the places we have been or the people we know. Whether she won or did not win the US Open, Gauff is worthy simply because she is a child of God.

Faith To Persevere In The Face Of Adversity

Coco Gauff may not be sure where she found the courage and belief to fight back after easily losing the first set to [2] Aryna Sabalenka. However, she was inspired by the Holy Spirit to perform at her best to honor her God. She is a Chrisitan, and she probably knows well that whatever we are called to do as children of God, we are to give it our best effort. We give our best, not to win the trophy or awards, those are secondary rewards, but to honor God. After winning the match, Gauff got down on her knees and prayed. That is something I have never seen another Christian tennis player do in the decades I have been following tennis.

Gauff Played Her Game To Defeat Sabalenka

There is no denying the power of Sabalenka’s game. However, Gauff found a way to neutralize that power. She is also much fitter physically than her opponent, perhaps it’s her youth. The other trait that was obvious was Gauff’s patience. She was willing to work the point, while Sabalenka lost the match because she lacked the patience to persevere until it was the right moment to strike. The result was a slew of unforced errors, with Gauff winning 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. The doubters can stop doubting, Coco Gauff is the 2023 US Open champion, and she climbs to a new career high, number three, on Monday.
