Madison Brengle Defeats Errani

Madison Brengle once ranked as high as number thirty-five, is currently ranked outside of the top hundred. She is currently thirty-three years old, and time is rapidly getting away from her. She has been on tour for at least ten years, and she has yet to win a singles title. This was a bit of a shocker, Madison Brengle winning a match. However, on closer examination, she was playing Sara Errani. The American won 6-3, 6-1.

Nice to see Danielle Collins win her match against Julia Grabher. Collins won 6-4, 6-4. [9] Taylor Fritz was pushed to five sets. Yannick Hanfmann made things quite difficult for Fritz. Fritz won 6-4, 2-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. [10] Frances Tiafoe defeated Yibing Wu 7-6(4), 6-3, 6-4. [16] Tommy Paul defeated Shintaro Mochizuki 7-5, 6-3, 6-1. [25] Madison Keys is riding high on confidence. She easily dispatched of Sonay Kartal 6-0, 6-3. Sloane Stephens won her match 6-2, 6-3. Stephens defeated Rebecca Peterson.

[32] Ben Shelton had his hands full against the sneaky Taro Daniel. Daniel pushed the American to five sets after he had lost the first two sets. Shelton stumbled across the finish line 6-4, 6-3, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3. Marcos Giron got through his first round match against Hugo Dellien. The American won 7-6(2), 6-4, 6-4. Christopher Eubanks won his match 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, 6-4. The American defeated Thiago Monteiro.

Seeds That Lost Their Way

[4] Casper Ruud was rudely upset by fan favorite, Liam Broady. Broady won the first set, lost his way and then came roaring back to take the last two sets 6-3, 6-0.  [8] Maria Sakkari lost in three sets after winning the first set 6-0. Marta Kostyuk dug her heels in and fought back to win 0-6, 7-5, 6-2. [16] Karolina Muchova lost 4-6, 7-5, 1-6 to Jule Niemeier. [13] Borna Coric was upset by Guido Pella. A bit of an upset. Pella won 6-3, 7-3, 4-6, 3-6, 6-1.

[18] Karolina Pliskova continues to struggle. Natalija Stevanovic, ranked two hundred and twenty-five, easily dispatched of the big serving Czech, 6-2, 6-3. [20] Roberto Bautista Agut said goodbye to Wimbledon in round one. The Spaniard lost in a five-set battle, 6-2, 6-7(7), 7-6(4), 4-6, 5-7, to Roman Safiullin.  American [27] Bernarda Pera did not make out of the first round. She lost to Viktoriya Tomova 7-6(3), 3-6, 3-6. [28] Tallon Griekspoor lost in straight sets to the dangerous Marton Fucsovics.

The spotty performance continues from American [22] Sebastian Korda. He lost in four sets to Jiri Vesely. [28] Elise Mertens lost 1-6, 6-1, 1-6 to former top ten player, Elina Svitolina. [29] Tomas Martin Etcheverry lost to the veteran, Stan Wawrinka. Wawrinka won 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Anett Kontaveit Bids Goodbye

Anett Kontaveit is retiring after Wimbledon and she won her first round match 6-4, 6-4.  Kontaveit defeated Lucrezia Stefanini. Unfortunately, playing back-to-back matches did not work in Kontaveit’s favor. She lost her second round match today to [32] Marie Bouzkova 1-6, 2-6.
