Yibing Wu derailed John Isner’s plans in Dallas. In a match that had three tiebreak sets, everyone expected Isner to win, including Isner and his team. That’s the thing about tennis, the same match that stings for the loser, is the match that brings tremendous joy to the winner.
Yibing Wu Changes History for China
The twenty-three-year-old becomes the first Chinese man to win a title on the ATP Tour. I found that so hard to believe. I sat there wracking my brain trying to think of the male Chinese players on tour over the years. A well-deserved victory for this young man, who withstood a barrage of aces from big John. He also saved four championship points. Better still, the 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 7-6(12) victory propelled Wu to a career high ranking of fifty-eight.
Injuries Derailed the Career of Yibing Wu
Wu turned professional in 2017. However, from March 2019 to January 2022 he was missing in action due to several injuries. This is a nice comeback for the Chinese player. I hope he stays healthy because I am curious to see how high he will climb.
