I remember when Serena Williams and Venus Williams broke on the scene. How can I forget these two black young ladies wearing beads in their hair. Why did that register with me? I am a black woman, who as a child wore beads in my hair. For me it was cool to see them so comfortable in themselves that they did not care what anyone thought.
The Attitude Of Self-Confidence
Many people misunderstand self-confidence for arrogance and pride; however, that is the result of a lack of knowledge, and it is also the result of being narrow-minded. Serena Williams and Venus Williams were examples of two young ladies who showcased a confident belief in themselves. They believed in their worth as valuable human beings and competent tennis players. Their ability to combine those two beliefs is what allowed them to become successful champions on the tennis courts.
They Became Role Models For Many People
Their attitude and their game resulted in growing fame on and off the tennis courts. Many young people and future tennis players look up to Serena and Venus. With fame came the formidable responsibility of being an influencer in the lives of young people. It is a responsibility that I hope they did not take lightly. They may not have asked for this responsibility, but it became a part of their respective journeys.
Did Serena Williams Accomplish Her Tennis Goals?
Serena Williams has twenty-three major titles in singles. Margaret Court has twenty-four major titles in singles. Every person who follows tennis knows that Serena wanted to surpass Margaret Court in the history books. Did she have opportunities to do so? Unfortunately, the truth is that she did. The thing about any sport is that you must capitalize on your opportunities when they occur.
The Tennis Legacy Of Serena Williams Will Live On
Serena Williams can walk away from tennis with her head held high. She accomplished more in tennis than any other black tennis player. She will be spoken about just like all the other tennis greats. Black mothers and fathers will talk about Serena to their children who want to pursue a career in tennis. We know that Serena will continue to live her life off the tennis courts to the fullest and we wish her the best.
