THE CHAMPIONSHIPS WIMBLEDON

There were thirty-four American men [16] and women [18] playing in the singles main draw at Wimbledon. Going into the second week, there are only three Americans remaining and two of them are men. The topped ranked American, [11] Taylor Fritz, and Brandon Nakashima.

What Do We Know About Taylor Fritz?

We know that Fritz has a lot of confidence in himself and his game. We also know that he was sidelined by injury for a bit. His weapons are his forehand and serve. What we don’t know is how he will respond to the pressure of expectations in a major. He got to the fourth round earlier this year at the Australian Open. Thus, Fritz hopes to go much further here at Wimbledon. However, standing in his way is the resurgent Jason Kubler, who is playing with joy. In their one previous encounter in 2018, Fritz won by retirement. This is a different arena and a whole new scenario, so expect a battle.

Two Unknown Variables And Potential Blockers

[99] Jason Kubler is playing with the belief that he belongs, and he is also playing with a sense of freedom. He has no expectations and simply wants to enjoy playing tennis after numerous knee surgeries to overcome a congenital defect. When you remove the desire to get a result you increase the probability of playing at your highest level. You are not focused on winning or losing, you are simply being. This Australian is playing formidable tennis and for the most part his game is unknown.

The other variable is Nick Kyrgios, who we are all too familiar with. When this Australian is fully engaged and ready to play, he is a dangerous opponent on any surface. However, his game translates well on grass, which makes Kyrgios a lethal opponent to the unprepared. Rafael Nadal got a taste of this when he was stung by the Australian in the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2014. The unknown is, which Kyrgios will show up.

Brandon Nakashima Is The Second American

At twenty-years-old, Brandon Nakashima is a relative newbie to the major scene. He got to the third round of Roland Garros earlier this year, but prior to 2020, he was a no show at the majors. This is all unfamiliar territory for the young American, who will be meeting his opponent for the very first time. What I do know about this kid is he is a quick study and he’s a fighter. We also know his favorite shot is his backhand and his favorite tournament is Wimbledon. This is his opportunity to show us what he is made of.
