NORDEA OPEN, BASTAD
Dominic Thiem has had a rough go of things following his right wrist injury in June 2021. Following surgery, the Austrian tried to make an unsuccessful comeback. Now he is ready to give the comeback a second attempt and so far, things are looking good at the Nordea Open in Sweden.
Dominic Thiem Is Currently Ranked 339
In their previous five meetings, played on hard court, Roberto Bautista Agut led their H2H 4:1. Today was their first meeting on clay and Dominic Thiem brought out his clay court game in full force. After breaking each other once, the first set ended in a tiebreaker, which was won by Thiem. As expected, the Spaniard fought back in set two to even the match.

Slowly but surely working his way into the match, the Austrian found his range and his rhythm. This time he did not give his opponent any opportunity to derail his plans. He served more effectively, denying Bautista Agut any break point opportunities. One break was all it took for Dominic Thiem to get his second victory over the Spaniard 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-4.
Sebastian Baez Is Tiem’s Next Opponent
This can potentially be a sterner test for the Austrian. The twenty-one-year-old Argentinian plays extremely well on clay and is not shy about going for his shots. Currently ranked thirty-four, he has already been to two clay court finals this season and won his first title on clay in Estoril. This will be their first meeting, and a good indicator for the Austrian about the level of his game. I expect it will be a battle, but then again, aren’t all clay court matches battles?

Jason Kubler continues his resurgence. Today the Australian defeated the number one seed, Felix Auger-Aliassime in three sets on grass in Newport. Elisabetta Cocciaretto defeated Katerina Siniakova in a tough three-set battle, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5.
