The third major of the tennis season got underway today. It is The Championships Wimbledon; however, it is not. This year there are two things different about the tournament. There will be no ranking points and there will also be no Russian or Belarusian tennis players in the draw. The number two ranked player, Alexander Zverev, is out of commission due to an ankle injury suffered at Roland Garros.
The Tradition Continues On Day One
The defending champion gets to play on centre court as the first match of the day. Novak Djokovic is the defending champion as well as the number one seed. Djokovic faced off against the twenty-four-year-old Korean, Soonwoo Kwon. Kwon managed to steal the second set; however, Djokovic righted his ship an won the last two sets to win 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Andy Murray faced off against James Duckworth. Duckworth got off to a good start then fizzled. Murray came back and won 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. [10] Emma Raducanu is looking to go further than the fourth round. She had the hard-hitting Belgium, Alison Van Uytvanck, as her first round opponent. However, despite a less than stellar performance, Raducanu walked away with the 6-4, 6-4 victory.

Last year’s semifinalist, [7] Hubert Hurkacz, was upset by the mercurial Spaniard. When Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is not injured, he is dangerous on every surface. Today the twenty-three-year-old Spaniard took the lead, stumbled a little and came back in the fifth set. He won 7-6(4), 6-4, 5-7, 2-6, 7-6(8).
American [7] Danielle Collins lost 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 to Marie Bouzkova. [16] Pablo Carreno Busta retired in his match tied at one set each. [22] Martina Trevisan lost easily 2-6, 0-6, to fellow countrywoman, Elisabetta Cocciaretto. Red-hot [23] Beatriz Haddad Maia lost 4-6, 6-4, 2-6 to Kaja Juvan. [31] Kaia Kanepi lost to Diane Parry 4-6, 4-6.

[20] John Isner had a battle on his hands against Enzo Couacaud but won in five sets. [23] Frances Tiafoe defeated Andrea Vavassori 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. Alison Riske defeated Ylena In-Albon 6-2, 6-4. Ann Li defeated Lucia Bronzetti 6-1, 6-4. [30] Tommy Paul defeated Fernando Verdasco 6-1, 6-2, 7-6(4).
