  1. [18] Coco Gauff got it done in straight sets. After a grueling first set, she served up a bagel to defeat Rebecca Marino 7-5, 6-0.
  2. [23] John Isner won three tiebreak sets to defeat Quentin Halys 7-6(3), 4-6, 7-6(1), 7-6(6). Once again, Isner big serve came to his rescue.
  3. After dropping the first set, Sloane Stephens dug in her heels and came roaring back to defeat Jule Niemeier 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. Nice to see positive effort and attitude from the American.

Jenson Brooksby Amongst Americans Who Lost On Day 1

[31] Jenson Brooksby lost fairly easily, 2-1-2, to Pablo Cuevas. It was a tough draw for Marcos Giron. He came out on the losing end against the in-form [18] Grigor Dimitrov. The American lost 1-1-1. Ann Li lost 3-2 to Alison Van Uytvanck. There was no love in Paris for Bernarda Pera, and she lost easily to [23] Jil Teichmann, 2-1.

Michael Mmoh’s struggles continues. Ranked 179 currently, he lost in straight sets to qualifier Bernabe Zapata Miralles, who is ranked 133. Denis Kudla had chances to possibly win this match; however, he failed to capitalize on his opportunities and lost in three tiebreak sets. No loss is ever easy but losing to a qualifier can really sting.
