It was a whacky match between eighth seed, Emma Raducanu, and lucky loser, Tamara Korpatsch. No player likes to lose a set 6-0. Still trying to figure out if Raducanu really played that well or Korpatsch was shell shocked. The German came on court with a heavily bandaged calf, so perhaps it took a while for her to feel comfortable with her movement.
6-0 Sets Can Be Deceiving
When you see a score of 6-0, you can never really make an accurate statement unless you watched the set. The German was clearly nervous, and the British player did not allow her to get comfortable. Raducanu never faced a break point in the first set. In this set, it was the case of the British player winning because her opponent was too nervous to get the ball in play. That proved to be the case as the German player settled into the match once she held serve for the first time in set two.
Raducanu Ran Out Of Gas
It is frustrating to watch a match when both players are not playing at their best at the same time. Playing on clay is exhausting and Emma Raducanu’s level of play fell off. The German capitalized with some solid serving and evened the match. Surely, the third set would see both players battling for every point and it would be a highly contested third set. Wrong! Raducanu got her second breath and came out on the attack in the third set. In contrast to the first set, Raducanu was broken twice and could not capitalize on her one opportunity to break.
Third Set Was All Emma Raducanu
There was no excuse for Korpatsch in the third set. She could not maintain a level of play to challenge the British player at her best. The German was broken twice in the third set and failed to break her opponent the once chance she had. In the first meeting between these two, the British player won 6-0, 2-6, 6-1. The Brit was dominant on her first and second serve. Despite dropping the second set, she won the first and third sets in dominant form.
