Roger Federer was made to play on grass and his record on the surface has been outstanding. As the eight-time champion at Wimbledon, he almost seemed invincible. However, everyone expected his dominance there would eventually end. Unfortunately, I don’t think many anticipated his performance today. Is Hubert Hurkacz to Federer, what Federer was to Pete Sampras? Wait a minute, let’s not get carried away.
Youth A Plus For Hubert Hurkacz
At twenty-four years old, the Polish player has the advantage of youth and a big serve. In the past, that would not have been enough against Federer. However, two knee surgeries later and the passage of time and even the great Federer could not fight off the spirited attack of his younger opponent. Yet, Hurkacz results of late had been sporadic and no one expected him to step up this big on Centre court against his Swiss opponent.

I did not expect Federer to make it this far. I felt that that the player who would cause him the most trouble would be a younger player who did not have any history of playing Federer and losing. Although Hurkacz had lost their only previous encounter, he had the weapons to cause his opponent problems on grass. At 6’5”, the Polish player has a big serve, steady backhand, and an excellent forehand. His weaknesses perhaps are his inexperience and his mental fortitude. He has shown in the past that he can struggle to close out his matches because of nerves.
Nerves Did Not Stop The Hurkacz Today
Hurkacz should celebrate his 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-0 victory, but keep it in perspective. Do not settle for a semifinal berth at Wimbledon. He needs to keep his focus on winning the title. Yet, that may be a tall ask for him. No one left in the draw can threaten the number one ranked player. However, as I always say, in tennis “be prepared for the unexpected”. Although, it is highly unlikely, with a victory over the king of grass, anything is possible.
