Americans on Day 2 At Wimbledon
- [6] Serena Williams loses 3-1 to [100] Aliaksandra Sasnovich by retirement in the first set. It was a seemingly benign move that derailed the seven time Wimbledon champion in the first round.
- [20] Coco Gauff defeated [211] Francesca Jones 7-5, 6-4.
- [160] Mihaela Buzarnescu pushed [111] Venus Williams to three sets; however, Williams was eventually able to squeak out the victory [7-5, 4-6, 6-3].
- The twenty eighth seed, Alison Riske, was not as fortunate. The American lost to [87] Tereza Martincova in three sets [2-6,6-4, 1-6].
- [72] Ann Li lost 4-6, 6-7 (1) to [39] Nadia Podoroska from Argentina.
- [46] Shelby Rogers upended the Australian veteran, Samantha Stosur, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3.
- [120] Claire Liu is into another second round at Wimbledon with a hard fought three set victory over [83] Misaki Doi. The American won 2-6, 6-3, 9-7.
- Unfortunately, these two Americans had to battle each other and it was [82] Madison Brengle who got the better of [97] Christina McHale in three sets. Brengle won 3-6, 7-5, 10-8.
- [50] Sebastian Korda, making his debut at Wimbledon, upsets [15] Alex de Minaur. This is a good first step for Korda because de Minaur is fresh off his grass court title in Eastbourne three days ago. The young American won 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5).
Keep An Eye On These Players
- [4] Alexander Zverev defeated [124] Tallon Griekspoor 6-3, 6-4, 6-1.
- Unfortunately, [17] Kiki Bertens bowed out in the first round to the nineteen year old Ukrainian, [70] Marta Kostyuk. Kostyuk won 6-3, 6-4. This is Bertens last season on tour and it’s certainly not the way she wanted to perform at Wimbledon.
- [21] Ons Jabeur easily defeated [60] Rebecca Peterson 6-2, 6-1. What a difference confidence makes, because after claiming her first WTA singles title nine days ago in Birmingham on grass, Jabeur is playing like she belongs at the top.
- [25] Angelique Kerber defeated [86] Nina Stojanovic 6-4, 6-3. She is also fresh off her recent grass court title; thus, Kerber may be feeling pretty confident about her chances of going deep in the draw.
Roger Federer Was Rescued By A Knee Injury
The stars were not aligned for Adrian Mannarino, who has never won a match against [6] Roger Federer. It appeared that this was his time, until he slipped and injured his right knee. The rest is history, the Frenchman retired, and Federer escaped with the victory to fight another day. Federer won 6-4, 6-7 (3), 3-6, 6-2, by retirement of his opponent.
