Leylah Fernandez Wins First Title

Leylah Fernandez

HOW HIGH WILL FERNANDEZ CLIMB?

Eighteen-year-old Canadian Leylah Fernandez gets the honors this week.  She won her first WTA singles title, never dropping a set en route to the title at the Abierto GNP Seguros tournament.  The highest ranked player that she defeated was Sara Sorribes Tormo, the number seven seed.  We can say she took advantage of the opportunity, capitalizing on the fact that the field was not that strong.  This is a great for the teenager who has only been playing on the ITF circuit since 2017.  In 2020 she got to her first WTA singles final in Acapulco.

NEW CANADIAN ON THE COURT

Loved her positive attitude, and her consistency from the back court.  I think she will continue to improve as time goes on.  She is number two ranked Canadian female tennis player.  Where is Eugenie Bouchard these days?  She is still trying to find her game.  Such a pity!  I hope Bouchard will regain her top form before it’s too late.  At twenty-seven, while it’s not that old, it may be too old if the results are not sowing.  Remember folks, she was once ranked as high as number five.

TOP 10 ATP & WTA RANKING CHANGES

ATP: Novak Djokovic remains at #1 and as with the WTA, there were no changes this week in the top ten members or their positions.

WTA: Ashleigh Barty remains at #1.  There were no changes in the top ten members or their positions from the previous week.  Interesting to note the top 6 members are twenty-nine years and younger. The #8 and #9 players are the two youngest members of the top ten, Aryna Sabalenka and Bianca Andreescu, respectively.

WHERE IS TAYLOR TOWNSEND?  Once such a promising young talent, the American tennis player has not played on tour since the US Open.  Is she injured?  Her ranking is dropping bit by bit, pretty soon if she does not get active, she will be out of the top one-hundred.  I hope all is well with her.  I would love to see her use that talent consistently.
