The last title that Serena Williams won was the Australian Open title in 2017. Everyone knows the story behind that victory. Since her return to tennis, Williams has gotten to five WTA finals, but she has yet to win one. Her quest is not to tie Margaret Court’s record, it’s to surpass it; however, until she can win a regular title, that quest is stalled.
Twenty-five-year-old Jessica Pegula is going to try to derail Williams’ quest even further when they meet in the ASB Classic final later today. She hopes to claim her second WTA singles title, while preventing Williams from winning her first WTA singles title in almost three years.
Williams is looking quite fit and hungry; however, many will be curious to see if the pressure of being in a final continues to rattle her. If she hopes to surpass Court’s record, winning this title today will be a very important step in that direction. Williams needs to get back to winning titles to re-establish that inner belief that she can do it. Winning breeds confidence and even though she is not lacking in confidence, she has not performed confidently in her last five finals. Perhaps 2020 is the year that she puts it all together.
Williams will also be playing in the doubles finals with her good friend Caroline Wozniacki. They will battle the all American team of Asia Muhammad and Taylor Townsend for the title.
