Ferro, Jarry & Rybakina Are 1st Time Champions

Ladies Open Lausanne: Women’s Final

[48] Alize Cornet (FRA) vs. [98] Fiona Ferro (FRA)

The twenty-two-year-old defeated her countrywoman, long-time veteran Cornet, in three sets.  In a match that showed fluctuating levels in confidence, it was the player that kept her belief strong who came out victorious. In the first meeting between these two French women, it was the younger player who took the 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 victory. Ferro turned professional in 2012 and this was the first singles final showing for her; she took advantage of the opportunity to claim her first WTA title.

It was a brilliant performance from the twenty-year-old Kazakhstani; she did not drop a set all tournament and won her first WTA singles title in her first trip to a final. Tig back from injury and childbirth, was in her first final since 2015. Tig did all the hard work to get to the final, knocking out the number one, eight and sixth seeds en route to the final. Unfortunately for Tig, she did not play up to the level she showed all tournament. Hopefully Tig will continue to build on this performance. Rybakina won 6-2, 6-0.

Swedish Open: Men’s Final

[64] Nicolas Jarry (CHI) vs. [71] Juan Ignacio Londero (ARG).

Third time is the charm for Jarry, who got to a final earlier this season and his first final last year. The twenty-three-year-old Chilean turned professional in 2014 and he has been talked about for awhile now as the next Chilean to do great things on the ATP Tour. This win is sure to one of many for Jarry, who defeated Londero 7-6(7), 6-4. This was the second final this year for Londero, who was certainly not happy to come out on the losing end; however, he will find the positives in a day or two.

ADDENDUM: [36] Dusan Lajovic (SRB) defeated [201] Attila Balazs (HUN) to capture his first ATP Tour title at the Plava Laguna Croatia Open in Umag. The Serbian has been on tour since 2007. This was his second career final and he won 7-5, 7-5.
