[3] Roger Federer (SUI) defeated [33] David Goffin (BEL) in straight sets to claim his tenth title in Halle. It probably came as no surprise as Federer owns their head-to-head 7:1; however, Goffin put quite a fight in the first set, forcing it to a tiebreaker. Unfortunately, the Belgium ran out of steam, did not capitalize on his break point opportunities, and did not protect his serve in the second set. While the will was there, perhaps a lack of confidence when it mattered was his undoing. Federer won 7-6(2), 6-1.
Lopez Keeps Winning, Despite Upcoming Retirement
[113] Feliciano Lopez (ESP) has a brilliant game on grass and today he was rewarded once more with a thrilling three set victory over a determined opponent, [38] Gilles Simon (FRA). Lopez won 6-2, 6-7(4), 7-6(2), making many wonder, “Why retire?” However, at thirty-seven, perhaps he is listening to his body, plus he already has lots planned for the next chapter of his life. The Spaniard led their head-to-head 5:2, winning every encounter on grass so perhaps today’s victory should not have been a surprise; yet, Simon is the much higher ranked player and perhaps felt this was his chance to defeat the Spaniard on grass. By capturing the Queen’s Club title, Lopez brings his career singles titles to seven, his first singles title in two years. Lopez also claimed the doubles title with Andy Murray.
Kenin Wins 2nd Career Singles Title
In their first meeting, the American, [30] Sofia Kenin, had her hands full. [13] Belinda Bencic (SUI) had the match just about wrapped up before Kenin came storming back to force a deciding set. The American saved three match points before coming back to claim the 6-7(2), 7-6(5), 6-4 victory; her second of the 2019 season. The Mallorca Open final was the third final of her career, all coming this year, and the breakout season continues for Kenin.
SPECIAL MENTION: by winning the title in Birmingham, the Australian Ashleigh Barty becomes the WTA Tour number one ranked player on 06/24/2019. Barty, the 2019 Roland Garros champion, becomes the twenty-seventh woman to ascend to the top ranking.
