AUSTRALIAN OPEN: DAY 7
WOMEN SEEDS
[2] Angelique Kerber (GER) was demolished by the feisty American, [35] Danielle Collins. Kerber only held her serve once the entire match. Collins won 6-0, 6-2. Collins had never won a match at the majors prior to this Australian Open and she came pretty close to losing in the first round; however, now she is into her first major quarterfinals.
[6] Sloane Stephens (USA) lost to [42] Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (RUS) 7-6(3), 3-6, 3-6.
[8] Petra Kvitova (CZE) defeated [87] Amanda Anisimova (USA) 6-2, 6-1. The American teenager was clearly overwhelmed and played nowhere close to her ability.
[15] Ashleigh Barty (AUS) defeated [30] Maria Sharapova (RUS) in a dramatic third set. Barty lead 4-0 and had opportunities to make it 5-0; however, Sharapova clawed her way back to even the set 3-3. Yet, Barty would not be denied; she won 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
MEN SEEDS
[2] Rafael Nadal (ESP) defeated [57] Tomas Berdych (CZE) 6-0, 6-1, 7-6(4). Nadal got his revenge for his miserable loss to Berdych in the quarterfinals of the 2015 Australian Open [2-6, 0-6, 6-7(5)].
[3] Roger Federer (SUI) lost to [14] Stefanos Tsitsipas (GRE) 7-6(11), 6-7(3), 5-7, 6-7(5). The defending champion is out of the draw, but he put up a valiant fight.
[4] Bryan/Bryan (USA) defeated Carreno Busta/Garcia-Lopez (ESP) 6-3, 7-6(4).
[6] Marin Cilic (CRO) lost to [22] Roberto Bautista Agut (ESP) in five sets: 7-6(6), 3-6, 2-6, 6-4, 4-6. Bautista Agut had back to back five set victories in the first and second rounds and now his third five set victory; one wonders how much he has left in his legs.
[20] Grigor Dimitrov (BUL) lost to [39] Frances Tiafoe (USA). Tiafoe had the trainer out and squandered a 4-2 lead in the third set; however, the American who turned twenty-one dug deep to win 7-5, 7-6(6), 6-7(1), 7-5. Tiafoe is into his first major quarterfinals and he will do his best to defeat Nadal next.
