WEEK: 09.18.2017
Zarina Diyas gets the mover of the week honors by virtue of winning her first career singles title on Sunday. She defeated another qualifier (Miyu Kato) in the Japan Women’s Open Tennis final in Tokyo to accomplish that feat. Once ranked as high as number 31, Diyas saw her ranking plummet after she underwent right wrist surgery in 2016. It has not been an easy road back for her and along the way she has sustained a left knee injury which was heavily taped the entire tournament; however, it did not impede her movement and seemed not to have distracted her from her objective.
PLAYERS (within the top 100) | SPOTS MOVED | NEW RANK |
Zarina Diyas (KAZ) | UP 37 | 63 |
Alison Van Uytvanck (BEL) | UP 30 | 68 |
Jana Fett (CRO) | UP 24 | 99 (CAREER HIGH) |
Christina McHale (USA) | DOWN 19 | 81 |
Oceane Dodin (FRA) | DOWN 14 | 62 |
Timea Babos (HUN) | UP 10 | 53 |
ATP Tour/WTA Tour: the top ten men and women remained the same on both Tours and maintained their exact positions from the previous week. There were no ATP World Tour events last week because of the Davis Cup semifinals and as a result there were minimal changes in the rankings of the top 100 players.
AMERICAN NUMBER ONES: Venus Williams remains the number one female player and Sam Querrey remains the number one for the men.
SPOTLIGHT PLAYER: Alexander Zverev maintains his top four position for the second consecutive week at number four. He is taking a much-needed break after his impressive run; he won five titles this season, two of which were Masters 1000 titles.
TOP 10 players in action this week: Pablo Carreno Busta is the only top ten male player in action this week. On the WTA Tour, quite a few top ten women take to the courts this week, amongst them is the number one ranked player, Garbine Muguruza.
