BNP Paribas Open, Indian Wells
[112] Bjorn Fratangelo (USA) vs. [42] Bernard Tomic (AUS)
To say this was another half-hearted effort from the talented Australian would be stating the obvious. It is so frustrating to watch him play when you are unsure if he is giving a hundred percent. It is even more frustrating because he is so talented. Why does Tomic have such a cavalier attitude for the profession than has benefitted him so much financially? Fratangelo had bad memories of winning the first set against a much higher ranked opponent at this tournament last year only to fall apart in the next two sets to lose the match; thus, he was hoping that today would not be a repeat of history after he took the first set from Tomic with the identical score. He had no need to worry as his opponent had little interest in being here and easily conceded the match without putting up much resistance. Fratangelo won 6-2, 6-2 and will have a tougher test in the next round against Tomas Berdych.
[38] Lauren Davis (USA) vs. [56] Viktorija Golubic (SUI)
Having lost to her opponent last year, Davis knew that winning tonight would not be easy; however, she was psychologically prepared for the battle. She trusted in her improved physical fitness and her rediscovered top form to get her through after she dropped the second set. Davis won her first title earlier this year and even though she did it the hard way, she has gotten more confident and with that rediscovered belief, she is willing once again to grind out the points. After taking the lead in the third, things looked grim when Golubic served for the match but Davis never stopped fighting and she wore her opponent down to get the 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 victory.
