2nd AO Stunner: Mischa Zverev Upsets Murray

AUSTRALIAN OPEN, Melbourne

DAY 7/ ROUND 4

[1] Andy Murray (GBR) vs. [50] Mischa Zverev (GER)

This is the second stunner of the tournament.  Is it as improbable as it seems?  I watched the match trying to figure out why Murray was losing the match.  He went up early breaks in both the first and second sets.  He served for the first set and lost that set.  He squeaked out the second set; yet, he never seemed relaxed.  He was edgy, distracted and completely frustrated by Zverev’s unorthodox style of play.  The realization that this was his tournament to win was probably too overwhelming. In his history at the Australian Open; Murray was 40:0 against all other players not named Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.  So why did he lose 5-7, 7-5, 2-6, 4-6?

AMERICAN RESULTS

[13] Venus Williams (USA) def. Mona Barthel (GER) 6-3, 7-5.  Despite trading breaks, Venus finally held it together and served out the match.  Next up in the quarterfinals is [24] Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (RUS).

3rd AO stunner and second of the day: [35] Coco Vandeweghe (USA) def. [1] Angelique Kerber (GER) 6-2, 6-3.  It was a comprehensive dismal of the number one seed and the best I have seen Vandeweghe play.  She got nervous, but she regrouped very quickly and  was relentless in applying the pressure; Kerber was left confused with no solution to the blistering pace of her shots. Can she go all the way?

Querrey/Young (USA) lost to Bolt/Mousley (AUS) 5-7, 6-3, 5-7

NOTABLE SEEDED MATCHES

[17] Roger Federer (SUI) def. [5] Kei Nishikori (JPN) 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3

[4] Stan Wawrinka (SUI) def. Andreas Seppi (ITA) 7-6(2), 7-6(4), 7-6(4)

[12] Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA) def.  Daniel Evans (GBR) 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-4, 6-4
