Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, London
[1] Andy Murray (GBR) vs. [2] Novak Djokovic (SRB)
Murray can celebrate for the rest of his life as he accomplished one of the biggest goals of any tennis player….ending the year as the number one-ranked player on Tour. He had the most difficult path to the final, playing two of the longest three set matches at the year-end-finals ever en route to getting to the final. No one expected him to have anything left in the tank, especially after his match yesterday against Milos Raonic; however, Murray showed us his determination when he gave everything he had today to defeat Djokovic 6-3, 6-4. It was only his 11th time doing so in 35 encounters, and this may be the sweetest victory of all for him.
Djokovic just never looked right. Despite his easy victory in the semifinals, he never got going. It was so obvious his lack of motivation and his fans are still uncertain if that stems from some hidden injury or simply that he is burnt out. Yet, all credit to Murray, he had to win this; while Djokovic did not play at his best, he still put up enough resistance so that Murray still had to stay focused and work hard to close out the match. Murray closed out his 2016 seasons with 8 titles, the most he has ever won in a season. Included amongst those titles are the Wimbledon title, singles gold at the Rio Olympics, and three Masters 1000 titles.
Congratulations to Andy Murray on a hard-earned victory and it was well deserved. He proved that hard work and determination always pays off in the end.
