AMERICAN SUCCESS STORIES ON DAY 5
[8] Madison Keys was given a scare by Naomi Osaka (JPN). Osaka served twice for the match but could not close it out. Down 2-5 in the third, Keys elevated her game, cut down on her errors and broke back twice to even the match. Osaka finally held serve to force a tiebreak; however, the damage was done and she could not recover her equilibrium. Keys showed us her determination as she clawed her way back to victory. She won 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(3).
[26] Jack Sock backed up his performance from Portland earlier this year, where he came all the way back from two sets down to defeat [7] Marin Cilic (CRO). Today it was much more straightforward, he won 6-4, 6-3, 6-3
A. Muhammad/T. Townsend defeated [15] K. Bertens/J. Larsson 6-4, 6-4
HOW THE SEEDS FARED ON DAY 5
After a questionable performance in his first round match, [1] Novak Djokovic (SRB) has not had to do much to get to the fourth round. His second round opponent withdrew before the match due to wrist injury. Today he won 4-2 after Mikhail Youzhny (RUS) retired due to left hamstring injury. At this rate, he will win the title without having to play much tennis.
[9] Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA) defeated [23] Kevin Anderson (RSA) 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(4)
Lesia Tsurenko (UKR) defeated [12] Dominika Cibulkova (SVK) 3-6, 6-3, 6-4
[13] Johanna Konta (GBR) defeated [24] Belinda Bencic (SUI) 6-2, 6-1
[14] Petra Kvitova (CZE) defeated [22] Elina Svitolina (UKR) 6-3, 6-4
Kyle Edmund (GBR) defeated US number one [20] John Isner in four thrilling sets of tennis. Isner was struggling physically, but despite that he fought to the bitter end. Great victory for Edmund who won 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(5).
It was an amazing comeback for Keys.
And an amazing collapse from Osaka; however, she is still young and hopefully this will inspire her to greater things. I saw her play in Singapore last year, she is a very talented young lady.
