US OPEN, USA
[3] Stan Wawrinka (SUI) had a battle on his hands against Daniel Evans (GBR), who came pretty close to upsetting him. Wawrinka showed his fighting spirit by coming back to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-7(6), 7-6(8), 6-2.
Juan Martin Del Potro (ARG) continued his summer comeback with the upset of his second seeded player. Today it was [11] David Ferrer (ESP) who had the misfortune of playing him and he lost 6-7(3), 2-6, 3-6. Next up for Del Potro is [8] Dominic Thiem (AUT).
I went to bed thinking that [14] Nick Kyrgios (AUS) had this in the bag and woke up later to see he had retired, losing to Illya Marchenko (UKR). Marchenko is into the fourth round of a Major for the first time in his career with the 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory.
[1] Serena Williams (USA) had very little trouble with Johanna Larsson (SWE) once she got used to the day conditions and won 6-2, 6-1.
[4] Agnieszka Radwanska (POL) also had an easy victory over [25] Caroline Garcia (FRA), winning 6-2, 6-3.
[5] Simona Halep (ROU) had to battle back in the third set from a 1-3 deficit to beat [31] Timea Babos (HUN) 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.
Despite the score, it was a battle for [10] Karolina Pliskova (CZE) to defeat [17] Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (RUS) 6-2, 6-4. Next up for Pliskova is [6] Venus Williams (USA), who had an easy 6-1, 6-2 victory over Laura Siegemund (GBR).
[11] Carla Suarez Navarro (ESP) had a fairly straight forward 6-4, 6-3 win over [19] Elena Vesnina (RUS).
NOTE: 4 Americans remain in the draw: three women, Keys and the Williams sisters; and one man, Sock.
