All American Semifinal Set In The Netherlands

Ricoh Open, ‘s-Hertogenbosch

2016CVande[43] Coco Vandeweghe (USA) vs. [120] Evgeniya Rodina (RUS)

Vandeweghe was brutally efficient in her match against the hapless Rodina.  She seems to enjoy playing in the Netherlands or perhaps it’s the grass. Rodina was frustrated time and time again by the pace of Vandeweghe’s shots and could only throw her hands in the air as the ball flew by her repeatedly.  It was a very dominant performance from the American, who is well-known for the ferocity of her serves as well as her groundstrokes.  That’s Vandeweghe’s style, attacking the ball, and it’s beautiful to watch when her shots go in; however, it can be disastrous when she misfires.  Today was a good day and she won easily 6-2, 6-2.

[68] Madison Brengle (USA) vs. [104] Kateryna Kozlova (RUS)

Brengle does not have the fire power of Vandeweghe; she has to win her matches with foot speed and guile.  She had some stiff competition from her opponent, Kozlova and squeaked out the first set.  The second set was a tad easier for Brengle.  She won 7-5, 6-4.  Her reward is the semifinals; however, she will have to get by countrywoman, Vandeweghe to get to her second career WTA singles final. Brengle leads their head-to-head 3:2; however, Vandeweghe won their only encounter on grass.  Tomorrow’s match should be a ferocious battle between the two.  Will Vandeweghe get to her second final in ‘s-Hertogenbosch or will it be Brengle who gets the honor?
