Isner fought his way back from a two set to one deficit to keep American men’s hope alive at this year’s French Open.  Gabashvili had all the momentum on his side after he won the second and third sets; yet, it was not enough to guarantee him victory.  Isner well-known for his endurance despite always looking ready to collapse, dug his heels in and fought back to even the match.  Confident and perhaps the fresher of the two, he would fight back again in the fifth to win the match 7-6(7), 4-6, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.  Unfortunately, he will get Andy Murray in the round of sixteen and he has never beaten him in five encounters.

[5] Bryan brothers defeated Marach/Martin 6-3, 7-6(1) and got a little revenge for their loss in the final of the Delray Beach Open earlier this year.

[19] Sloane Stephens lost to [102] Tsvetana Pironkova (BUL) 2-6, 1-6 after leading 2-0 in the first set.

NEWS OF THE DAY: [4] Rafael Nadal was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to persistent pain in his left wrist.  The severity of his injury is not yet known; however, it was deemed prudent to avoid further damage to the wrist.  His wrist was anesthetized by a local agent of some sort (possibly lidocaine or some other amide or ester agent).
