Francesca Schiavone won the Rio Open title on Sunday; her first singles title since 2013 and is back in the top 100 after falling out at the end of last season. She had 15 consecutive seasons in the top 100 and has been ranked as high as number 7. A combination of injury and the effects of playing against players that are hitting the ball flatter and harder saw Schiavone struggling just to make it out of qualifying rounds and first rounds of main draws. It does not get any easier with age; however, Schiavone proved once again that she can still outplay her opponents on clay.
