Miami Open presented by Itau
[CR16] Venus Williams (USA) vs. [CR123] Urszula Radwanska (POL)
Venus got off to a great start, breaking Radwanska early in the match; unfortunately, that break was temporary, as Williams would fail to consolidate and the match was back on serve. A transient state of affairs as both players seemed incapable of holding serve after their first service games. They were both feeling the effects of a lack of confidence, surprising in Williams’ case, given the brilliant start she has had to the season.
The second set was almost a replica of the first, as both players continued to struggle on serve. Neither player seemed capable of holding on to the momentum gained, immediately giving back the advantage to their opponent. Williams realizing it was to her advantage to win in straight sets, increased her focus. She began striking the ball with authority and dictating play. Radwanska was not able to duplicate the result of their last encounter, as she was unable to elevate her game. Williams won 6-3, 6-2 despite her erratic performance.
