BNP Paribas Open, Indian Wells
[CR5] Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) vs. [CR37] Belinda Bencic (SUI)
There is no shortage of confidence in Bencic; however she has had a dismal start to the season. A victory today would significantly improve her outlook. Nevertheless, Wozniacki was probably not the opponent she wanted to face; the last time they played she left with bagels. However, Bencic showed the determination her mentor, Martina Hingis, is renowned for and dug into this match, pushing Wozniacki relentlessly until she cracked.
It could be that Wozniacki was simply tired from her recent victory in Kuala Lumpur; however, it will still be a bit concerning to team Wozniacki that she lost this match. All credit to the teenager who did not let the memory of last year’s defeat hamper her and who controlled her emotions much better today, staying focused and positive even when Wozniacki broke back. This 6-4, 6-4 victory will certainly boost Bencic’s confidence, can she build on this in the next round?
