Men’s Final: [CR14] Feliciano Lopez (ESP) vs. [CR73] Victor Estrella Burgos (DOM)
Lopez retained his half-asleep look the entire match. He was beaten time and again by passing shots and never adjusted his net approach game. Hampered by a right thigh injury, Lopez was unable to maintain his focus and it was reflected in his erratic play. He struggled to make easy volleys, his return game was off and his slice shots were often errors. Winning your first title is special. Would Estrella Burgos get that special feeling that comes with the first title victory?
For most of the match Lopez was on his heels and played with a look of discomfort. Realizing that time was running out, Lopez willed himself to concentrate, serving the best he had the whole match to win the second set. However, Estrella Burgos was determined, spurred on by the knowledge that he had beaten Lopez in there only other encounter. Although he wobbled slightly in the third, he regained his composure to win the tie break and gain the victory 6-2, 6-7(5), 7-6(5). The injured thigh and the persistent excellent play of Estrella Burgos were too much for Lopez to overcome.
Congratulations to Victor Estrella Burgos on winning his first ATP World Tour title.
