[CR4] Petra Kvitova (CZE) vs. [CR35] Madison Keys (USA)
Their previous encounter was a distance memory; yet, not forgotten and Keys wanted a different outcome. They were both hampered by nerves the entire match and the victor would be the one who conquered their jitters better. Keys unlike in her previous matches got off to a better start. Kvitova, the more experienced player was more adversely affected by the occasion and made too many errors to prevent the loss of the first set.
Yet, you expected Kvitova to refocus and take her game to a higher level in the second and make it a contest. There was no shortage of power, as both players generate huge pace behind their strokes; however, the errors were also abundant as both players desperately wanted the victory. The evidence of Keys maturation was present as she patiently worked the points, believing in her ability to win the match. The second set was unpredictable as neither player was able to seize the momentum, but Keys used her new tactics and powerful strokes to finally take control and win 6-4, 7-5.
It was a good match. It is evident that Keys is a lot more mature, now 19yo. I, too, expected Kvitova to up her game and overtake Madison but Madison remained focused and determined throughout the match. Kvitova seemed a little down on herself at times when she missed a point or made an error. Should we give deference to Keys new coach…Lindsay Davenport??!!
