Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, London
Round Robin, Day 2: [CR4] Stan Wawrinka (SUI) vs. [CR7] Tomas Berdych (CZE)
It was a pitiful performance by Berdych. He was unable to adjust his game to counter Wawrinka’s strategy. Berdych was so stressed he could neither think nor execute his shots and he is developing an unhealthy trend of folding under the pressure of big matches. Berdych played with trepidation the entire match and he was uncertain what to do with his groundstrokes. Wawrinka took advantage of his confusion and dominated the first set 6-1.
The second set was a replica of the first. Berdych did make an attempt to compete better; however, the result was the same, he missed more shots than he made. The difference in today’s match was the mental component; while Wawrinka played with belief and cleanly executed his shots, Berdych was plagued by doubts in every point. It was an embarrassingly easy victory for Wawrinka, who won 6-1, 6-1.
I was feeling his pain throughout the match.
