BNP Paribas WTA Finals, Singapore
Semifinal: [CR1] Serena Williams (USA) vs. [CR8] Caroline Wozniacki (DEN)
Serena was not alert at the start of this match and her frustration was evident as she smashed her racquet on the court. Serena was not only battling an opponent but also her best friend on tour, and she struggles whenever she plays someone close. It was the ambivalence of wanting to succeed yet knowing that it would come at the expense of her friend.
After an abysmal start, Serena found her rhythm and thoughts of friendship were suppressed as Caroline had made it clear that she had no intention of being distracted. Serena won the second set and all her fans thought she was back in control; yet, those who have followed Serena know that lately, nothing is guaranteed until she wins the match.
The third set was highly competitive as both players were fully engaged; however, Caroline had a slight advantage because she was the better mover. Things looked grim as Serena lost her serve and Caroline served for the match. This tournament is special and Serena also hoped for an opportunity to avenge the disastrous loss suffered at the hands of [CR4] Simona Halep (ROU); thus, she found the will and a way to win the tie-break and the match 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(6).
