Women’s Final: [CR1] Serena Williams (USA) vs. [CR11 ] Caroline Wozniacki (DEN)
They were both nervous, it was evident in their play in the first set. Serena missed too many easy shots, her serve was off, and it looked as if she was frozen in place on many occasions. Wozniacki had too few winners, could not find her serve and that caused a lack of confidence in her groundstrokes. The end result, a series of breaks in the set, not exciting tennis.
In the second set, Serena had the advantage once she found her serve and her shots were more forceful. She was also motivated by a fierce desire to win this title to salvage her year. Wozniacki was hoping that she was more prepared the second time around to win her first Major title, but she never overcame her nerves to play at her highest level.
Although it was not spectacular tennis, there were some brilliant rallies in the latter stages of the second set. Wozniacki’s improved play came too late to prevent the inevitable, a straight sets win by Serena.
Serena won the match 6-3, 6-3, claiming her first Major title of 2014 and her eighteenth Major title overall.
